Silk Road, China


This is the story of our trip along the ancient Silk Road in China.

Diary:

  1. Sat Sep-10-2005: Should have left for Beijing, but we missed the flight! Stay at home.
  2. Sun Sep-11: Left for Beijing via San Fran, United 747.
  3. Mon Sep-12: Skip one day across intl date line. Arrive in Beijing. Too late to go to Xian or Lanzhou. Have dinner with DaChing, followed by massage. Spend night in Beijing hotel.
  4. Tue Sep-13: Fly to Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province. Yellow River. Liu Jia Dam. The "Thousand Buddha Caves" Bing Ling Temple, where most of the thousand statues are from the 1100's AD. Take sleeper train bound for JiaYuGuan.
  5. Wed Sep-14: JiaYuGuan! Incredible place! Night market. Stay in local hotel.
  6. Thu Sep-15: Long drive (10 hours) through desert to Dunhuang. Camel rides to sand dunes. Night market again. Local hotel.
  7. Fri Sep-16: Dunhuang. Moogau grottos. Rugs. Take sleeper train bound for Turpan ("Tolufan" in Chinese).
  8. Sat Sep-17: Turpan. Gaochang ruins. Gaochang was a key city of the Buddhist era of the Uygur people, but was sacked by the Muslims. The guide explained that 160,000 people in the city were killed by having nails driven into their heads! Now, there are just ancient ruins remaining.
    Grape Valley, raisens, ruins, graves/mummies, plain mosque, underground irrigation system ("Karez Well"). Local hotel.
  9. Sun Sep-18: Turpan, drive to Urumqi ("Ulumuzhi" in Chinese). Long drive! Heavenly Lake in mountains. Market. Little red books. Uigyur wedding. "Ramada" hotel.
  10. Mon Sep-19: Urumqi, fly to Yining. Kazakhstan border. Sarim Lake. Horse and camel ride. Local hotel.
  11. Tue Sep-20: Yining to Nalati. Bus broke. Horses in afternoon. Stay in ex army barracks.
  12. Wed Sep-21: Walk in nice rolling hills. Afternoon ride. Drove back to Yining. Night flight to Altay. Drive from airport to Buerjin where we checked into a hotel.
  13. Thu Sep-22: Up early for drive to Kanas. Lake. Boat. Mongolian hut. Primitive hotel with no heat.
  14. Fri Sep-23: Kanas. Riding. Drove back to Buerjin, ate, cleaned up, and then took night flight to Urumqi. Say goodbye to Taipei team.
  15. Sat Sep-24: Morning shopping in Urumqi market. Flashlights. More red books. Say goodbye to LinMaMa and Stephanie. Fly to Shanghai.
  16. Sun Sep-25: Shanghai.
  17. Mon Sep-26: Shanghai.
  18. Tue Sep-27: Fly from Shanghai to SF to Seattle.
